  1. D. H. says:

I used to like Tom Smith — bought all his albums, helped work his table at Denvention (and alerted his agent/whatever to the fact that the table was missing some of what was on the inventory list), got his permission to use “My baby is the destroyer of worlds” for the costume contest, helped with a fundraiser at Windycon, brought him water while he was filling in a break at a Chicon — and then he told me, “Don’t use my name any more.” And stumble-shuffled away. Not so much as a clue what the problem was.

I’m not a damn groupie, I’m older than he is, and about a tenth of his weight. I can’t sing or play anything except a French Horn, badly, so I’m not looking for a “contact.” I was only trying to be polite and appreciative and help out, which I always do at all cons, for all guests and anyone else who needs help, being military emergency-response qualified, and almost always from the back room.

I still think he’s talented and funny. But neither I, nor anyone I know, will ever buy anything from him again. That kind of rudeness and insulting behavior towards a con worker proves what kind of a person he really is, and it isn’t “wonderful.”
